This is Pink Floyd's post-Barrett band, in America, in a ballroom. Syd Barrett had been eased out that spring — David Gilmour brought in first alongside him, then instead of him — and the group playing the Avalon was the one that would spend the next four years working out what it was without its songwriter. *A Saucerful of Secrets* had been released in June.
The Holy Modal Rounders, second, were Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber's determinedly strange old-time string band, who had put the word "psychedelic" on a record in 1964, three years before anyone in San Francisco used it. Bob Schnepf and Jerry Wainwright drew the poster: a spiral of globes, a hand holding one bearing the Family Dog logo, against a black star field.

ANTAGONIST-CHECKED. 1968-08-04=Sunday, closing night of the Pink Floyd FD-131 weekend (same poster as the 08-02 hero). Secondary. NOTE: the CCR/Steppenwolf/It's A Beautiful Day 'last first-period Fillmore Auditorium show' sometimes mis-attached to Aug 4 1968 is actually JULY 2-4 1968 (COAU note dates it Jul 4) -- deliberately NOT included in this window. COAU Family Dog index (Hannan/Arnold): 'August 2-4, 1968 / Avalon Ballroom / ... Pink Floyd / FD-131'. Closing night. BILLING NOTE: COAU lists 'Chrome Cyrcus, Holy Modal Rounders, Pink Floyd' — apparently alphabetical rather than by billing.
