Carousel Ballroom

San Francisco, CA

History

The Carousel Ballroom at 1545 Market Street had two lives. Before it became the psychedelic-era Carousel — the musicians' cooperative hall that Bill Graham took over and renamed Fillmore West in mid-1968 — the building operated as a conventional dance hall that also hosted teen promotions. In August 1966 the Bay Area promoter Bill Quarry ran 'Teens 'N Twenties' dances there, including an Aug 25, 1966 bill headlined by the Yardbirds. The room's famous chapter, as the Carousel/Fillmore West, began in January 1968.
