On Thursday, August 25, 1966, the Yardbirds played the old Carousel Ballroom on Market Street - not the psychedelic Carousel of 1968, but a Bill Quarry "Teens 'N Twenties" teen-dance booking, with the local Harbinger Complex, Peter Wheat and the Breadmen, and Just VI beneath them (bill and promoter per concertarchives, the chickenonaunicycle Carousel list, and the Heritage Auctions poster record). It sits at the edge of this chronicle's subject - a teen-fair show, outside the BG/FD poster series - but it earns its place for one reason: this was the stretch when Jimmy Page, having joined on bass, moved to lead guitar as Jeff Beck stayed behind in California to recuperate, with Chris Dreja sliding to bass. The Yardbirds line-up that would, within two years, become Led Zeppelin was taking its shape on a San Francisco stage. (This is the single documentable in-window 1966 event at this venue; the psychedelic Carousel Ballroom would not open until January 1968.)

The surviving poster makes the moment unusually legible. Bill Quarry's sheet advertises two nights - the Carousel on the 25th, the Rollarena in San Leandro on the 26th - and it headlines Jeff Beck, picturing him with his guitar beside Keith Relf, Chris Dreja, Jim McCarty and Paul "Sam" Samwell-Smith. Tickets were three dollars. What the poster promises and what the audience most likely saw are not the same thing: printed in advance, it sells a Beck who was by then sitting the tour out. The artifact preserves the intended line-up; the history records the one that walked on stage.
