History

The Cow Palace is a large indoor arena on the San Francisco–Daly City line, opened in 1941 and long used for livestock expositions, sports, and large-scale concerts. It sits outside the poster-driven ballroom scene this chronicle tracks: it hosted arena-scale package tours rather than the dance-concerts of the Fillmore and Avalon. It appears here for the July 26, 1966 Rolling Stones show — a KFRC-promoted package bill (with Jefferson Airplane, the Standells, the McCoys, the Trade Winds, and Sopwith Camel) that fell on Mick Jagger's 23rd birthday — recorded as adjacent context, not as part of the ballroom scene proper.
