The Rolling Stones played the Cow Palace in Daly City, just over the San Francisco line, on their fifth American tour.
The Cow Palace is not a ballroom and this is not a Family Dog or Bill Graham night — it is a 14,000-seat livestock and exhibition arena that hosted rodeos, boxing and political conventions, and it is where acts too large for a hall played when they came to the Bay Area. The Stones in the summer of 1966 had *Aftermath* out and "Paint It Black" at number one, and were a package-tour act playing short sets to screaming rooms, still two years from the run of records that made them what they became.
The contrast with what was happening four miles north that same summer is the point. The Fillmore and the Avalon were building an audience that came to listen; the arena circuit was still selling hysteria.
