"Bilbo's Birthday Party" at California Hall — a Tolkien-themed dance in the summer of 1966, and a good example of the kind of event the poster series preserves that the histories usually skip.
California Hall on Polk Street was a German-American social hall from 1912, and through the middle sixties it hosted the overflow of the ballroom scene: benefits, one-off dances, and events thrown by people who were not Bill Graham or Chet Helms. The Tolkien framing was not incidental — *The Lord of the Rings* had appeared in American paperback in 1965 and was being read on campuses as something close to a counterculture text, and Bilbo's birthday, September 22, became a minor recurring occasion for exactly this kind of party.
Verification Notes
ANTAGONIST-CHECKED. VERIFIED co-lead: same Thursday 07-28-1966, California Hall 'Bilbo's Birthday' (Hobbit-themed) — Big Brother (Janis Joplin) / Great Society (Grace Slick) / Charlatans; lights Romero & Anderson. POSTPONEMENT HEDGED: thesanfranciscosound family-tree lists say originally 07-22 -> 07-28, but poster/dealer listings don't confirm it and a separate 07-22 CalHall date also circulates — prose hedged, not asserted. ARTIST UNCERTAIN: one flyer variant credited 'C. Harris', another uncredited — NO poster_artists link asserted (honest gap). AOR-2.156 NOT on Wolfgang's (classicposters browser-only) — no image staged. AOR-2.156, California Hall, 28 July 1966. A non-ballroom promoter's dance; recorded as part of the wider poster series rather than the Graham/Helms line.
