Howlin' Wolf is the name to stop on. Chester Burnett was fifty-eight, six foot three, and had been making records for Chess since 1951 — "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Spoonful," "Little Red Rooster," songs the entire British blues boom had been built on. Putting him second to a local band with one album is either an indignity or the most characteristic thing the Family Dog ever did, depending on how you look at it; Chet Helms booked the roots of the music beneath his own scene's bands as a matter of routine.
Dan Hicks, third, was the Charlatans' drummer moonlighting with the acoustic swing group that would shortly become his main project.
