Blue Cheer were about to matter more than anyone at the time would have guessed. The San Francisco trio's version of "Summertime Blues," recorded later that year, is routinely cited as one of the first heavy metal records — three men playing at a volume the equipment could barely carry, in a scene that generally prized intricacy. Beefheart, second-billed, was a year from *Trout Mask Replica*; the Youngbloods had moved west from New York and were becoming a California band.
