July 18, 1967 is the hero, and its interest is a tension baked right into the poster. That Tuesday was the opening night of BG-73, a Bonnie MacLean poster for a run stretching July 18-23 at the Fillmore Auditorium. The headliner was Sam & Dave - a soul and R&B act at the top of their powers - sitting above the James Cotton Blues Band and Country Joe and the Fish. Country Joe held the bottom slot for the 18th through the 20th, with the Loading Zone substituting in for the 21st through the 23rd. A soul headliner anchoring a psychedelic-ballroom poster is exactly the sort of cross-current the Fillmore ran on, and BG-73 with MacLean's authorship is well corroborated, down to a copy held by the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The following year put July 18, 1968 at the closing edge of a leg rather than the opening. That Thursday was the last night of the July 16-18 stand at Fillmore West - Big Brother, Richie Havens, Illinois Speed Press again - riding the first leg of Lee Conklin's BG-129. The same poster's second leg turned the room over to Sly and the Family Stone and the Jeff Beck Group across July 19-21, so BG-129 is one artifact spanning two distinct bills.

By July 18, 1969, the day had grown crowded. At Fillmore West, Country Joe and the Fish opened a July 18-20 leg alongside Joe Cocker and the Grease Band, with Country Weather beneath them - this leg apparently extended or substituted for what had been a B.B. King week, and that substitution is worth hedging rather than asserting cleanly. Meanwhile, the Family Dog on the Great Highway ran its own July 18-20 bill of Sir Douglas Quintet, Kwan Dios, and Bicycle. The exact catalog numbers for both of these 07-18 posters are honest gaps for this run and are left unstated - and specifically, this is not BG-183, which belongs to the following week of July 22-27.

July 18, 1965 and July 18, 1966 are both nulls - the 1965 date predating the scene, and the 1966 Monday finding both ballrooms dark.
