History
The Lubbock Municipal Coliseum opened in 1956 on the campus edge in Lubbock, Texas, a city of about a hundred and thirty thousand on the South Plains, and served as the region's arena for basketball, rodeo, livestock shows and touring entertainment. For a British band on an American tour in the middle 1960s it was a typical stop — the West Texas date between larger cities, in a hall built for agriculture as much as for music. Lubbock's own contribution to the story is older and larger: it is Buddy Holly's home town, and the Coliseum stands a short distance from where he grew up.
