History

The Malibu Shore Club is a beach club on the south shore of Long Island at Lido Beach, open since 1948. Through the 1960s it ran summer concerts alongside its ordinary business as a swimming and cabana club, and promoter Don Friedman put touring rock acts into it — the Who played there on July 7, 1967, in the middle of their first substantial American tour. It is an unglamorous but genuinely characteristic booking of the period: before a national circuit of purpose-built rock venues existed, a British band on tour played wherever there was a stage and an audience, including a Long Island beach club between a swimming pool and the Atlantic.
