History

The Kaleidoscope operated for roughly six months in 1968 at 6230 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, in a building with an unusually layered history: it opened in 1938 as the Earl Carroll Theatre, a Broadway impresario's Hollywood revue house; became the Moulin Rouge nightclub under Frank Sennes in 1953; and in late 1965 turned into the Hullabaloo, an all-ages rock club named after the television show. As the Kaleidoscope — run by the management of Canned Heat — it was Los Angeles's attempt at a San Francisco-style psychedelic ballroom, booking West Coast touring acts alongside local bands including the Doors. It did not last the year. In September 1968 the building was announced as the Los Angeles home of Hair and renamed the Aquarius Theatre.
