History

The tennis stadium at Forest Hills in Queens was built in 1923 for the West Side Tennis Club and hosted the US National Championships — later the US Open — until 1977. From the middle 1960s it doubled as a summer concert venue, and its Music Festival series put major touring acts in front of roughly fourteen thousand people in a horseshoe of concrete grandstands. The Beatles played there in 1964. Bob Dylan's 1965 Forest Hills concert, weeks after Newport, is one of the most-discussed nights of his electric turn. For a British or American band touring the East Coast in the middle sixties, Forest Hills was the New York outdoor date.
