On Wednesday, September 24, 1969, the Fillmore West gave its stage over to a benefit. Billed as "Save the Children" and presented by the Bay Area Drug Committee, the night gathered a deep local bill — It's a Beautiful Day at the top, with the Sons of Champlin, Sanpaku, the Outlaws, the Ace of Cups, and Terry Dolan filling out the card, all under the Brotherhood of Light's projections (per chickenonaunicycle's Fillmore West list, Wolfgang's, and Corry Arnold's Sons of Champlin performance chronology). It sat, tellingly, in a gap in Bill Graham's numbered poster series: the weekend before had been BG-192 (Taj Mahal, September 18–21) and the weekend after would be BG-193 (Chuck Berry, September 25–28), a one-night midweek benefit slotting neatly between two consecutive weekend runs.

That placement is the key to the day's honest limitation. No Bill Graham series number can be confirmed for this benefit from any reachable archive; the only catalog identifier that exists is Wolfgang's internal inventory code, which is not a BG number, and their record names Eduardo Arderi as the designer. A one-off midweek charity show falling in the numbering gap between two BG weekends is exactly the kind of event that tended to be handled outside the main poster series — so the catalog number is recorded here as an honest gap rather than invented, and the poster is noted only as a non-series piece pending a human's look at the browser-only archives.

The bill itself is a good cross-section of the 1969 San Francisco scene at the point where the first psychedelic wave was starting to settle into its established local acts. It's a Beautiful Day, David LaFlamme's violin-led band, had broken through that year with "White Bird" and was a genuine Fillmore West headliner — and it is the one act on this bill with an independent record of actually taking the stage that night, since setlist.fm logs an It's a Beautiful Day performance of "White Bird" at the Fillmore West on the date. The Sons of Champlin brought their Marin horn-rock; the Ace of Cups were among the scene's few all-women bands; Terry Dolan was a singer-songwriter on the local circuit. The rest of the bill is advertised rather than confirmed act-by-act, and the billing order below It's a Beautiful Day is genuinely unsettled — the three main sources each arrange the middle and lower acts differently — so this chronicle treats everyone under the headliner as an unranked advertised bill.

One entity on the card deserves a careful hand: the "Outlaws" here are not the Southern-rock band of the same name from Tampa, but a short-lived San Francisco project involving Gary Duncan and Dino Valenti in the orbit of Quicksilver Messenger Service, which setlist.fm's cross-listing of Duncan and Valenti on the same bill supports. It is a namesake collision that would be easy to get wrong, and the two must not be conflated.

September 24 is unusually crowded across the timeline years, but its two strongest contenders belong to other pages. In 1966 the date was the second Winterland night of Bill Graham's inaugural Winterland weekend — the Jefferson Airplane / Paul Butterfield / Muddy Waters run on Wes Wilson's BG-29 poster — and in 1967 it was the closing Sunday of the Charlatans and Buddy Guy stand at the Avalon on Robert Fried's FD-83. Both are real, both touch the 24th through their multi-night runs, and both are already live events in this chronicle carried on their opening-night pages; because a day page draws only the events actually dated to it, neither renders on the 24th, and reusing their catalog numbers would duplicate posters already in the collection. That is why the 1969 benefit, distinct and well-attested if uncatalogued, anchors the day. In 1968 there was no San Francisco ballroom event on the date at all, and 1965 offers only Matrix club activity. The result is an honest one: a real, richly-billed San Francisco benefit night, recorded with its poster gap stated plainly rather than papered over.

Verification Notes

ANTAGONIST-CHECKED (2026-09-22). VERIFIED: Wed 1969-09-24, Fillmore West; 'Save the Children' benefit presented by the Bay Area Drug Committee -- It's a Beautiful Day (headliner) over Sons of Champlin, Sanpaku, the Outlaws, Ace of Cups, Terry Dolan; lights Brotherhood of Light (COAU Fill West list + wolfgangs + Corry Arnold Sons-of-Champlin chronology). HONEST GAP -- NO Bill Graham series catalog number is confirmable: this is a one-night non-BG benefit in the numbering gap between BG-192 (Sep 18-21) and BG-193 (Sep 25-28); only a wolfgangs internal SKU FMW690924 exists (designer Eduardo Arderi), NOT a BG number -> catalog_number NULL, anchored=false. Its two stronger candidates (BG-29 1966 Winterland; FD-83 1967 Avalon) are ALREADY LIVE rows whose spans reach 09-24 -- not reused (would duplicate catalogs; day pages render by month_day so they don't show on 09-24 anyway). Bill order below It's a Beautiful Day is ADVERTISED/unranked; only It's a Beautiful Day has independent play-confirmation (setlist.fm 'White Bird' 9/24/69). The 'Outlaws' = Gary Duncan/Dino Valenti SF one-off, NOT the Tampa band -- must not be entity-linked to that Outlaws. FD-27 rejected as hero (two-conflicting-artifacts trap: cancelled vs happened). HERO of 09-24. || IMAGE GAP CLOSED AS DELIBERATE (2026-09-24, browser pass, Fletch decision): drove classicposters.com in Chrome (403s headless) and ran three searches -- (1) the 1969 date-sorted year table shows a COMPLETE September sequence with NO 09/24 row at all: 09/18 BG-192 -> [nothing] -> 09/25 BG-193 -> 09/27 MSO-WRC; (2) "Save the Children" = No Results Found; (3) "Arderi" = No Results Found. Wolfgang SKU FMW690924 returns 200 but resolves to their generic homepage, not a product page. Conclusion: the artifact is not in the collector record, consistent with a one-off charity benefit that likely got a photocopied flyer rather than a printed poster. DO NOT re-run this search. Remaining untried avenue: FAMSF (the other browser-only source, museum rather than dealer) -- rated a long shot. Ships text-only BY DECISION, not by omission.
