FD-79 is in this chronicle's window but not in San Francisco, and that is the point of including it.

On September 8 and 9, 1967, the Family Dog ran a bill at 1601 West Evans in Denver — Big Brother & the Holding Company with Blue Cheer and the Eighth Penny Matter — on a poster by Rick Griffin. Chet Helms had opened a Denver branch of the Family Dog that summer, an attempt to export the Avalon's model to another city, and it lasted a matter of months. Local law enforcement and licensing authorities were hostile to it from the start; the room closed before the year was out.

The catalog number carries the story: FD-79, also indexed FDD-1 — the Family Dog's numbered series continuing, with a Denver sub-series starting at one. Rick Griffin, who drew it, was among the most gifted draughtsmen in the poster group and later made the *Aoxomoxoa* cover for the Grateful Dead. Big Brother, headlining, were three months past Monterey. Blue Cheer, second-billed, were about to make one of the loudest records of the decade.

A San Francisco poster series with a Denver branch, gone within a year — the export failed, but the sheets survive, and a chronicle that only counted San Francisco addresses would lose the fact that the attempt was made.
