Sunday, September 8, 1968 closed the Avalon's weekend: the last of three nights for the James Cotton Blues Band with the Sir Douglas Quintet, Pulse and Womb, on Roger Weil's FD-136.

James Cotton had played harmonica in Muddy Waters's band for a dozen years before forming his own, and by 1968 was headlining ballrooms on his own name — one of the Chicago players whose move to the West Coast circuit is a small, recurring story throughout this chronicle. The Sir Douglas Quintet beneath him were Doug Sahm's band, Texans relocated to California, who turn up on Avalon and Fillmore bills across four years.

FD-136 is the second and last poster Roger Weil made for the Family Dog. He drew FD-135 the week before — the white-on-black engraving-style sheet for the Youngbloods — and then his name disappears from the series entirely. Two consecutive weekends in the late summer of 1968 and nothing else: no birth or death dates recorded, no training, no account of how the commissions came about. The Avalon's numbered run went to roughly 147 sheets and is remembered through five or six names; Weil is one of the many hands that actually made it.
