By 1969 the Matrix was booking a different kind of week — local bands on short runs rather than touring names. September 3 had Mendelbaum with Womb.

Mendelbaum were a Bay Area group who recorded an album that went unreleased for decades; Womb, on the same bill, also turn up this week two miles away at the Fillmore West, third-billed under Spirit on David Singer's BG-189. That is the ordinary texture of the scene in its late phase: the same second-tier bands circulating between the big hall and the small club in the same week, most of them a year or two from dissolving without a record.
