San Francisco
Southside Sound System
Phoenix
Up on Haight Street the Straight Theater had Big Brother & the Holding Company for a third consecutive night, with the Southside Sound System and — swapped in for this date — Phoenix.
The Straight was the neighbourhood's own room: a converted cinema at Haight and Cole, run by people who lived in the district, operating in a permanent argument with the city over its dance permits. Its bills rotated the third act nightly, which is why September 1 has Freedom Highway, September 2 has Colours and September 3 has Phoenix under the same headliner. Janis Joplin was six months past Monterey and still, for a few more months, the singer in somebody else's band rather than a solo name.
Verification Notes
COAU Straight Theater listings, 03 September 1967: 'Big Brother and the Holding Company, Southside Sound System, Phoenix'. Third act rotates nightly across Sep 1-3 (Freedom Highway / Colours / Phoenix) -- per-night bill, not a fixed run. Unpostered.
