By Wednesday, September 7, 1966 Robbie Basho had come off the Matrix bill and the Blues Project finished the week on their own.

The listing is one name. What that one name meant in September 1966 is a band at the exact centre of a moment: the Blues Project were the group musicians talked about and the charts largely ignored, playing electric blues with a jazz player's appetite for the long form, and about to record *Projections* — three days in a studio, released that November.

They are also a useful corrective to how this era is usually told. The Blues Project were from Greenwich Village, not San Francisco; they came west to play a week in a small club rather than a weekend in a ballroom; and they broke up inside two years, with Kooper and Katz leaving to build Blood, Sweat & Tears and Kulberg forming Sea Train. Almost nothing about their story fits the San Francisco narrative, and they were in the middle of the San Francisco calendar for a week.

The Matrix ran on this model constantly — one act, most of a week, no poster printed. It is why the club is named in every history of the period and documented in almost none of them.
