Big Brother & the Holding Company at the Straight Theater on Haight Street, with the Southside Sound System and Freedom Highway.

The Straight was the neighbourhood's own room — a converted cinema at Haight and Cole, run by people who lived in the district and operating in a permanent argument with the city over dance permits. It printed few posters, which is why nights like this survive only in the listings.

Its bills rotated the third act nightly: Freedom Highway on the 1st, Colours on the 2nd, Phoenix on the 3rd, all under the same headliner. Janis Joplin was three months past Monterey.

Verification Notes

ANTAGONIST-CHECKED. COAU Straight Theater listings, Friday 01 September 1967: 'Big Brother and the Holding Company, Southside Sound System, Freedom Highway'. (Sep 2 swaps Freedom Highway for Colours; Sep 3 for Phoenix -- so the bill is per-night, not a fixed run.) HONEST GAP: unpostered Straight Theater bill, no catalog number -- recorded as a real event without a poster rather than omitted. COAU Straight Theater listings, Friday 01 September 1967: 'Big Brother and the Holding Company, Southside Sound System, Freedom Highway'. UNPOSTERED. Third act rotates nightly across Sep 1-3 — per-night bill, not a fixed run.
