Saturday, August 31, 1968 closed the Youngbloods, It's a Beautiful Day and Initial Shock at the Avalon, ending the FD-135 run.

The Youngbloods had cut "Get Together" in 1967 and watched it do very little. Two years later a public-service campaign put it back on the radio and made it, retroactively, one of the defining songs of the era — a sequence that says something about how the period actually assembled its own soundtrack, often years after the fact and by accident. On this night in August 1968 it was still an album track by a band from the East Coast who had moved to Marin County and turned into a California group.

It's a Beautiful Day, second-billed, were about a year from "White Bird" and the album with the white bird on the cover; David LaFlamme's violin made them one of the few San Francisco bands with a genuinely distinctive front instrument.

Roger Weil's poster — the white-on-black engraving of a masked, feather-crowned figure riding a lizard, flanked by botanical sprays — is one of two he made. The other, FD-136, went up the following weekend, and then he vanishes from the record.
