Thursday, August 31, 1967 was night three of Cream, the Electric Flag and Gary Burton at the Fillmore Auditorium, under Blashfield's BG-80.

Gary Burton, third-billed beneath a British blues-rock trio, is the booking that makes this a Fillmore card rather than a rock card. He was twenty-four and had developed a four-mallet vibraphone technique that let him play chords and melody at once, which had no real precedent; Gary Burton had just left Stan Getz's band to lead his own group, and the quartet he brought west included Larry Coryell, one of the first guitarists to work seriously in both jazz and rock idioms. Putting that under Cream, in front of an audience that had come for extended blues improvisation, is exactly the kind of programming Graham did constantly and that almost no other promoter attempted.

The Electric Flag in the middle were Mike Bloomfield's band, months old, built to fuse blues and soul with a horn section — "An American Music Band," as they billed themselves. And the standing caveat applies to this night as to every other in the run: the Prime Movers replaced the Flag on one unspecified evening, and the record does not say which.
