Saturday, August 30, 1969 was night two of Spirit, Savoy Brown and Womb at the Fillmore West, on the back half of David Singer's BG-189.

Spirit had come a long way in twelve months — this chronicle has them second-billed at the Avalon under FD-134 in August 1968, and here they are headlining a Graham bracket a year later. The band was Randy California and Ed Cassidy, stepson and stepfather, plus Jay Ferguson, Mark Andes and John Locke: a guitarist who had played in a New York band with Jimi Hendrix at fifteen, and a drummer old enough to have worked with Cannonball Adderley. *Clear* had come out that year and *Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus*, the record they are now remembered for, was a year away.

Savoy Brown, second-billed, were one of the British blues bands who effectively lived on the American ballroom circuit; Kim Simmonds kept the name going through a famously unstable lineup for the next five decades.

Above them all, Singer's two Michelangelo Davids stood on the moon under a black sky — printed on glossy-coated stock and sharing a double postcard with the Santana sheet that followed the next week.
