The Grateful Dead opened the back half of BG-134 at the Fillmore West, with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Sons of Champlin.
The middle of that bill is the remarkable part. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band were New Orleans traditional-jazz musicians, several of them in their seventies, playing the repertoire they had been playing since the 1920s — in a psychedelic ballroom, under the Grateful Dead, on a poster whose lion would become a Santana album cover. Graham and Helms both did this constantly and it remains the most under-told thing about these rooms.
