Friday, August 29, 1969 opened the back half of BG-189 at the Fillmore West: Spirit with Savoy Brown and Womb, under David Singer's photomontage.

Two figures of Michelangelo's David stand on a lunar surface against a black sky — not one statue but two, the second small and receding across the grey. Apollo 11 had landed six weeks earlier, and Singer, who used classical and Renaissance art throughout his collages, simply put the most reproduced sculpture in Western history into the Sea of Tranquility and let the two facts argue. It was printed on slick glossy-coated index stock at roughly 13⅞ by 22 inches — a different physical object from the uncoated sheets of 1966, and part of how the series changed as it professionalised.

Spirit had been second-billed at the Avalon twelve months earlier. Randy California, their guitarist, had played in a New York band at fifteen with a musician then calling himself Jimmy James, who gave him the stage name to tell him apart from another Randy; the world later learned that musician as Jimi Hendrix. Ed Cassidy, the drummer, was California's stepfather and two decades older than the rest of the group.
