Thursday, August 28, 1969 closed the Ten Years After bracket at the Fillmore West — the front half of David Singer's BG-189, with Terry Reid and the Bar-Kays — before Spirit took the poster's back half the following night.

Singer's image is worth describing properly: two figures of Michelangelo's David, standing on a lunar surface under a black sky. Not one statue but two, the second small and receding across the grey. Singer used classical Greek and Renaissance art repeatedly in his collages, and here the joke lands because of the date — Apollo 11 had touched down six weeks earlier, and the most reproduced sculpture in Western art was standing in the Sea of Tranquility as if it had always been there.

It was printed on slick, glossy-coated index stock at roughly 13⅞ by 22 inches — a different physical object from the uncoated sheets of the 1966 era, and part of how the series changed as it professionalised. It shared a double postcard with BG-190, the Santana sheet from the following week.

The Bar-Kays, third on this bill, carry the hardest story on the card. The original band had been Otis Redding's group and died with him in the Wisconsin crash of December 1967; two members survived and rebuilt it. Twenty months later they were closing a Fillmore West bracket under a British blues-rock band.
