Sunday, August 27, 1967 closed the FD-77 run at the Avalon: Big Brother & the Holding Company with Bo Diddley, Bukka White and the Salvation Army Banned, on Robert Fried's "War and Peace" sheet.

Read the card from the bottom up and it spans four decades of American music. Bukka White had recorded for Victor in 1930 and for the Library of Congress at Parchman Farm in 1939, and had been rediscovered in 1963 by two young enthusiasts who wrote to "Booker T. Washington White, Aberdeen, Mississippi" on the strength of a lyric — and the letter reached him. Bo Diddley had been recording for Chess since 1955 and had given rock and roll one of its foundational rhythms, borrowed by half the bands in the room without much acknowledgement. Janis Joplin was twenty-four, two months past Monterey Pop, playing the hall where Big Brother had become a band.

Robert Fried, who drew it, was a Bay Area painter whose poster work is denser and more painterly than the hand-lettered sheets around it. He died in 1975 at thirty-eight. A cataloguing note this chronicle has had to make more than once: some Family Dog indexes misfile FD-73 against this weekend. FD-73 belongs to late July; the Avalon sheet for August 24-27 is FD-77.
