Sunday, August 25, 1968 closed the FD-134 weekend at the Avalon: Spirit over the Sir Douglas Quintet and Notes From the Underground.

This is the Avalon's last full year, and the fact colours everything about a routine Sunday closing night. Chet Helms would lose the hall before 1968 was out — a permit fight with the city, a landlord, and accumulated debt — and reopen the following June at 660 Great Highway, out at Ocean Beach, as far from the city's centre as it was possible to get. The Family Dog's numbered poster series, which had run since 1966 and reached FD-134 by this weekend, would peter out shortly after.

So the Avalon in August 1968 is a room booking three-night weekends with the same care it always had, a few months from the end. Spirit were on their way up and would headline the Fillmore West within a year. The Sir Douglas Quintet had been playing these two halls since 1966. And the Sunday closing night got its own poster, the way every weekend had.
