Thursday, August 24, 1967 was night three of Cream's first Fillmore residency, with the Butterfield Blues Band and Charlie Musselwhite's Southside Sound System — and the Fillmore listings bill them in that order, Butterfield above Cream, for every night of this run. Cream take the top of the card only from BG-80, beginning the 29th.

Bonnie MacLean's poster for the week is one of her most striking. BG-79 is printed in red, gold, white and purple, and its central image is a circle within which the lettering for the acts appears — held beneath a human face and a pair of hands, perhaps a sorceress with a crystal ball displaying the names of the performers. It was run on white index stock at roughly 14 by 21 inches, and a double postcard was printed carrying both BG-79 and BG-80.

That pairing is itself the point. Cream played the Fillmore under two consecutive posters across nearly two weeks in August and September 1967, and very few acts were important enough that Bill Graham would book them two weeks running. It is the clearest measure of what the residency meant — not a booking but a bet, and one that paid off in a live reputation the band's records had not yet earned them.

MacLean had come to the Fillmore as Graham's box-office assistant, married him, and inherited the poster drawing board when Wes Wilson walked out over money that spring. BG-79 is from her first months in the most visible design job in American music.
