On Thursday, August 21, 1969, John Mayall's BG-188 week rolled on at Fillmore West - Mother Earth and the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble beneath him, Brotherhood of Light overhead (per gdao and wolfgangs, Aug 19-24, David Singer). Mother Earth - Tracy Nelson's Nashville-by-way-of-San-Francisco band - was the local anchor of a bill topped by a visiting Englishman playing quiet, drummerless blues in the room that had defined loud.

It is worth sitting with how strange that pairing was. Nelson had moved west and then, in the way of that year, back toward country; Mayall had arrived from England having just dismantled his own loud band. The New York Rock & Roll Ensemble were conservatory-trained and played oboe and cello alongside the guitars. Three acts, three different arguments about what a rock bill could be, on a Thursday in a hall built for volume.
