Saturday, August 19, 1967 was the third night of Quicksilver Messenger Service's four-night stand at the Avalon Ballroom, with the Other Half.

Four nights was a substantial booking for a band with no record, and it is the clearest measure of what Quicksilver were locally: signed to Capitol, nothing released until the following spring, and a live reputation built entirely in rooms like this one. John Cipollina's guitar — a Gibson SG through Standel and Fender amps with five Wurlitzer horn tweeters stacked above them, worked hard with the vibrato arm — produced a tone closer to a voice than a guitar, and it never recorded quite the way it sounded in the hall. Which is precisely why the band's standing rests on people who were there.

Jack Hatfield's FD-76 is the engraving that wandered in from another century: a blue-on-white line drawing of two figures beneath a canopy of foliage, printed on white index stock at roughly 13⅞ by 20 inches, sitting among the saturated dissolving letterforms of the 1967 Avalon run like a plate from a natural-history volume. Hatfield made almost nothing else — FD-76 and FD-87 for the Family Dog, BG-103 and BG-104 for Graham, and the Magic Mountain piece — and is remembered by catalog number rather than by name.

The postcard came in three varieties: an ordinary "place stamp here" reverse, a bulk rate permit, and a bulk rate card mechanically addressed to people on the Family Dog's own mailing list.
