Thursday, August 17, 1967 opened a four-night Quicksilver Messenger Service stand at the Avalon Ballroom, with the Other Half and Melvin Q warming up.

Quicksilver that summer were the great unrecorded San Francisco band — signed to Capitol, no album until the following spring, and a live reputation in this room that was already out of proportion to anything you could buy. Chet Helms gave them four nights on that reputation alone.

Jack Hatfield's poster is the quiet one in the Family Dog run. Hatfield made almost nothing: FD-76 and FD-87 for the Family Dog, BG-103 and BG-104 for Graham, and the Magic Mountain piece catalogued as AOR 2.317/2.318. That is close to his entire output in the form. FD-76 is a blue-on-white line drawing — two figures beneath a canopy of foliage — printed on white index stock at roughly 13⅞ by 20 inches, drawn with the patience of an engraving and looking, beside the saturated dissolving letterforms around it in the series, as though it wandered in from another century.

The postcard came in three varieties, all about five by seven inches, and the differences are a small window into how the Family Dog reached its audience: Type A has the ordinary "place stamp here" reverse; Type B carries a bulk rate permit; Type C carries the permit and was mechanically addressed and mailed to people on the Family Dog's own mailing list. The ballrooms are remembered for posters stapled to telephone poles, but a substantial part of the operation was a subscription list and a bulk mailing.
