Saturday, August 19, 1967 was the closing night of the Young Rascals' two-night bracket at the Fillmore Auditorium, with the Charles Lloyd Quartet and the cast of *Hair*.

Neither Chuck Berry nor Count Basie played this night, though both names are printed on the poster hanging over it. Blashfield's BG-78 advertises a seven-night span and three separate headline engagements: Berry through the 17th, the Rascals on the 18th and 19th, Basie's orchestra on the 20th and 21st.

What ties the week together is the act in the middle of every single card. Charles Lloyd's quartet — Lloyd on tenor and flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums — played all seven nights while three different headliners rotated above them. That is an unusual booking by any standard, and it says something about where Lloyd sat in 1967: *Forest Flower*, recorded live at Monterey the year before, had sold to an audience that modern jazz had not reached in years, and Graham could put him in front of a rock crowd for a week without anyone complaining.

Jarrett was twenty-two that August. DeJohnette was twenty-four. Both would spend the following decades among the most significant musicians in jazz, and in the summer of 1967 they were the house band at a psychedelic ballroom on Geary Street.
