Friday, August 18, 1967 belongs to the Young Rascals, not to Chuck Berry — and that distinction is the whole reason this page exists.

Blashfield's BG-78 covers seven nights at the Fillmore Auditorium, August 15 through 21, and prints four headline names across its four out-of-round shapes. The nights underneath ran in three separate brackets. Chuck Berry had closed the night before. Count Basie would not arrive until the 20th. August 18 and 19 belonged to the Young Rascals, with the Charles Lloyd Quartet in the middle and the touring cast of *Hair* completing the card.

The Rascals — still billed as the Young Rascals at this point, the "Young" dropped a year later — were a New York band who had come up through the Long Island club circuit and had "Good Lovin'" and "Groovin'" behind them. Felix Cavaliere's organ and Eddie Brigati's voice made them one of the very few American groups holding their own against the British acts on the singles chart. They had played the Fillmore before, in August 1966 under Wes Wilson's BG-24, when Quicksilver Messenger Service opened for them; a year later they were back in a room that had changed considerably.

And *Hair* on a Fillmore bill is worth pausing on. The musical had opened off-Broadway that October in New York and would not reach Broadway until 1968; what appeared here was a touring company, performing in a rock ballroom, on a card with a jazz quartet and a blue-eyed-soul band. Graham's programming that week is the strongest single argument that the Fillmore was never simply a rock venue.
