Wednesday, August 16, 1967 was the second night of Chuck Berry's three-night bracket at the Fillmore Auditorium, with the Charles Lloyd Quartet and the Steve Miller Blues Band.

It is worth being exact about that bill, because the poster invites a mistake. Jim Blashfield's BG-78 announces seven nights — August 15 through 21 — and prints the names of four lead acts: Chuck Berry, Count Basie and his orchestra, the Charles Lloyd Quartet and the Young Rascals, with the Steve Miller Blues Band and the cast of *Hair* also appearing. Read as a single bill it is one of the most extraordinary cards of the decade. Read correctly, it is three consecutive engagements: Berry on the 15th, 16th and 17th; the Young Rascals on the 18th and 19th; Count Basie on the 20th and 21st. Only Charles Lloyd's quartet played the whole week.

So on this Wednesday the room held a founding architect of rock and roll, a modal jazz quartet whose *Forest Flower* had improbably found a rock audience, and a young Steve Miller — and neither Basie nor the Rascals were anywhere near the building.

The sheet itself is Blashfield's first in the Graham series: four slightly out-of-round shapes carrying the lead acts' names, worked around avian and human forms, claws of a sort, and mushrooms. It was printed on white index stock at roughly 14 by 21 inches. A double postcard was also run, carrying the images of both BG-77 and BG-78 across about four and a half by fourteen inches, with a bulk rate permit on the back; some copies were addressed and mailed to people on the Fillmore's mailing list. That mailing list is a small, easily missed piece of how the scene actually worked — Graham was not only papering telephone poles, he was posting the week to subscribers.
