The Charles Lloyd Quartet opened at the Avalon with the West Coast Natural Gas Company, on FD-74.

Lloyd's quartet at this point was Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums — three musicians who would each become major figures in jazz over the following decade, playing a ballroom on Sutter Street to an audience that had mostly come up through rock. *Forest Flower*, recorded live at Monterey the previous year, had done the improbable thing of selling to that audience. For a couple of years in the late sixties the line between the jazz and rock circuits was thinner than at any point before or since, and Lloyd is the clearest evidence of it.
