Iron Butterfly opened at the Fillmore West with Canned Heat and Initial Shock, on the back half of BG-131.
*In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida* had been released in June 1968 and was on its way to becoming one of the best-selling albums of the decade — seventeen minutes of organ, drum solo and mispronounced title on side two. Canned Heat, beneath them, were a Los Angeles blues band built by two record collectors, Bob Hite and Alan Wilson, whose knowledge of pre-war blues was encyclopaedic and whose "On the Road Again" was on the radio that summer. Both bands would play Woodstock the following year.
