Don and Phil Everly at the Fillmore West in 1969 is one of those bookings that reads as strange now and was entirely deliberate then. Their run of hits — "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream" — was a decade behind them and their close-harmony singing had gone directly into the Beatles, the Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel and half the bands on the Fillmore's own calendar. Graham booked them the way he booked Chuck Berry and Count Basie: as the source, in front of an audience that had absorbed them second-hand.
