Santana here are worth noting for the date: July 1968, still spelled out in the venue lists as a local band, still more than a year from Woodstock and the debut album. They appear repeatedly through these 1968 pages in exactly this position — third or second on someone else's bill — and it is a useful corrective to the way the story is usually told backwards from *Abraxas*.

Paul Butterfield's band had by this point moved well past its Chicago-blues origins into horn arrangements and long-form playing; *The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw* had come out that year.
