Charles Lloyd is the reason this booking matters. He was a jazz saxophonist and flautist whose quartet — with Keith Jarrett on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums, both near the start of their careers — had made *Forest Flower* in 1966, a live record that sold in numbers no modern jazz album was expected to and found an audience among rock listeners. Lloyd played the Fillmore repeatedly, and for a couple of years was the clearest evidence that Graham's audience would sit still for something other than guitars.
