Night two of the Yardbirds at the Fillmore Auditorium, with the James Cotton Blues Band and Richie Havens.
The Yardbirds by mid-1967 were on their third and last great guitarist. Clapton had gone in 1965, Beck in 1966; Jimmy Page was now playing lead, and within a year the band would dissolve and he would build Led Zeppelin out of the wreckage. The group that played these two nights is the one that made *Little Games* — commercially the weakest record they ever released and the direct ancestor of the loudest band of the next decade.
James Cotton, in the middle, had played harmonica for Muddy Waters for a dozen years. Richie Havens opened — solo, open-tuned, thumb over the neck, two years from opening Woodstock.
