Tom Weller
Biography
Tom Weller was a Berkeley-based graphic artist active in the mid-to-late 1960s Bay Area scene, best documented as the house artist for the Jabberwock coffeehouse on Telegraph Avenue and as the poster/handbill artist most associated with Country Joe and the Fish. Cataloged work places him producing Jabberwock handbills for Country Joe in late 1966 plus a series of monthly Country Joe calendar posters into 1967, California Hall posters, a Vanguard record-release piece, and a Jefferson Airplane handbill for the Matrix. Biographical detail beyond his catalog of work is scarce; little is reliably documented about his life, training, or later career, and his association with Cedar Alley–area pieces is plausible but not firmly confirmed.
Why They Matter
Weller is a minor but genuine figure of the Berkeley side of the poster era — a reminder that the East Bay coffeehouse/club circuit (the Jabberwock especially) generated its own graphic culture alongside the San Francisco ballrooms. His tight, ongoing identification with one band, Country Joe and the Fish, is unusual: he functioned almost as a band-embedded artist rather than a venue freelancer. His personal biography is largely undocumented — a profile honestly limited by thin sources.
